A survey showed that 68 percent of the respondents said they would use self-driving cars instead of conventional vehicles to pass through the city.

The survey was conducted by the Seoul Institute to find out the impact of the spread of self-driving cars on the city's traffic system. For three weeks in May last year, the institute asked 1,000 city passers-by who used cars, public transportation and taxis, "If you buy a self-driving car, would you switch to a self-driving car when you drive downtown?"

According to the results of the survey on Tuesday, 68.3 percent of the respondents said they would use self-driving cars to travel through the city. Broken down by the means of transportation currently used, 83.7 percent of car users were willing to switch to self-driving cars. Taxi users followed with 81.8 percent. Only 58.2 percent of public transportation users used to do so.

According to a survey of respondents who answered that they would not switch to self-driving cars, 60 percent of the respondents cited road congestion as the most. "Because the current means (public transportation) are likely to be faster," (23%) and "(current means) are economical" (17%). In addition to the autonomous parking function, self-driving cars can be parked outside of their destination when parking and can be sent back home.

In the survey, more than half of the respondents who said they would switch to self-driving cars when driving through the city said they would use parking lots outside their downtown destination. The response rate was 67.3 percent for public transportation users and 65.5 percent for passenger cars. On the other hand, 26.7 percent of the respondents said they would just park in downtown destinations, and 21.2 percent of public transportation, respectively.

The most suitable distance from the destination to the parking lot near the city center was "within 10 minutes" (38.8 percent for passenger cars and 36.7 percent for public transportation). Most preferred distance within 30 minutes, including "10 minutes and 30 minutes" (23.5 percent for passenger cars and 26.9 percent for public transportation).

"As the environment where self-driving cars and manned cars coexist is expected to last for the next 30 years, it is necessary to prepare and implement step-by-step measures for predictable problems," the researcher noted.

자율주행자동차가 있다면 기존 교통 수단 대신 자율주행자동차를 이용해 도심을 통행하겠다는 응답이 68%로 높게 나온 조사 결과가 눈길을 끈다.

서울연구원이 자율주행자동차 보급이 도심 교통체계에 미칠 영향을 파악하기 위해 실시한 자율주행자동차 선호도 조사다. 연구원은 지난해 5 3주간 승용차, 대중교통, 택시를 이용하는 도심 통행자 1000명을 대상으로만약 자율주행자동차를 구매한다면 도심 통행 시 자율주행자동차로 전환하겠냐고 물었다.

9일 조사 결과를 보면 응답자의 68.3%가 자율주행자동차를 이용해 도심을 통행하겠다고 답했다. 현재 이용하는 교통 수단별로 나눠보면 승용차 이용자가 83.7%로 자율주행자동차로의 전환 의향이 가장 높았다. 택시 이용자가 81.8%로 뒤를 이었다. 대중교통 이용자는 58.2%에 그쳤다.

대중교통 이용자 중 자율주행자동차로 전환하지 않겠다고 답한 응답자에게 그 이유를 물은 결과 도로혼잡(60%)을 가장 많이 들었다. ‘현재 수단(대중교통)이 더 빠를 것 같아서’(23%), ‘(현재수단이) 경제적이라서’(17%) 순으로 나타났다. 자율주행자동차는 무인 자율 주차 기능 외에 주차 시 목적지 이외 주차가 가능하고 집으로 돌려보낼 수도 있는 게 큰 장점으로 꼽힌다.

이번 조사에서 도심 통행 시 자율주행자동차로 전환하겠다는 응답자의 절반 이상은 주차 시 도심 목적지 외 근교 주차장을 이용하겠다고 답했다. 이 응답율은 대중교통 이용자의 67.3%, 승용차 이용자의 65.5%였다. 반면 그냥 도심 목적지에 주차한다는 이용자 응답은 각각 승용차의 26.7%, 대중교통의 21.2%였다.

목적지에서 도심 근교 주차장까지의 적합한 거리로는 ‘10분 거리 이내’(승용차 38.8%, 대중교통 36.7%)가 가장 많이 꼽혔다. ‘10~30’(승용차 23.5%, 대중교통 26.9%) 등 대부분 30분 이내 거리를 선호했다.

연구원 측은자율주행자동차와 유인차가 공존하는 환경이 향후 30년간 지속될 것으로 예상되므로, 예측 가능한 문제점에 대한 단계별 대책 마련과 시행이 필요하다고 지적했다.
